This project was born with the purpose of valuing wool through know-how, memory and sharing.

Wool time was an artistic residency held at the Sardanisca cultural centre, 3km from Azaruja, in Alentejo, where wool was investigated as matter, memory and situated cultural practice. Sardanisca was the ideal place for this residency, where sheep and pastoral life are present and involve us. Through contacts with local shepherds, it was possible to participate in and document a shearing, allowing the direct collection of wool. It was possible to identify the wool and the errors and practices to avoid in shearing in order to improve, not only so as not to compromise the quality of the wool, but also to help the shepherd, shearer and animal welfare.

Tempo da lã | phase 2

Proposal

Research and material collection. Participation in shearings, collection, treatment, cataloguing and storage of wool.

Identification of sheep and wool and implementation of good practices.

Exploration of wool treatment techniques, from unfolding to storage and washing.

Research and collection of local stories and knowledge, integrating oral memory and territory. In parallel, there is research and listening work: collecting stories linked to wool, people and territory, so that the project is not just technical, but human.

Creation of materials, objects and visual supports, culminating in public presentations (exhibition/installation/open workshops), adaptable to cultural and school facilities or public spaces. The project generates physical and visual materials that remain beyond the workshops — posters, guides and objects that teach and document the process.

Contribution

Workshops and co-creation processes, open to the community, focused on manual wool work. These will be practical learning spaces where the public follows the entire journey of wool, understanding the material, the mistakes, the time and care required.

No Lodo

Synopsis

The genesis of the project “No Lodo” (In the sludge) was the discovery of family albums in slide format, submerged in sludge after two flash floods. The speed with which the narratives present in the slides were lost was surprising and raised many questions: What do we do with these images now? The destruction created new images with new narratives and possibilities, but what are we really talking about when we speak of “destruction as creation” or “found object (ready-made)”? What relationship exists between these and our lives, or our habits in an increasingly digital but also increasingly disposable society? Can everything disappear in an instant? What is the place of our history and our memories? At a time when our collective memory is at such risk of being subverted, this is a project that makes us think. It is an artistic project but also an object for reflection. We understand that “No Lodo” meets the purpose of questioning and, in doing so, stimulating debate, critical thinking and, consequently, more active participation in society.

About

Sardanisca is located in a peaceful courela about 2km from Azaruja, an important village in cork production.
